Every Diamond Independently Certified
Why It Matters

The Importance of
Diamond Certification

A diamond's value is determined by its 4Cs : Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. Since no two diamonds are identical, the grading of these characteristics can vary from one observer to the next. An independent, third-party certificate removes all subjectivity and provides you with an authoritative, verifiable assessment of exactly what you are purchasing.

Without a certificate from a trusted laboratory, there is no reliable way to know whether a diamond's stated grade is accurate , leaving buyers entirely at the mercy of a seller's assessment. A reputable grading report is your guarantee of quality and your reference point for future valuations, insurance, and resale.

Expert Perspective

While many independent laboratories exist, not all command equal respect for consistency and rigor. The most internationally recognised and trusted labs are GIA, IGI, SGL and HRD. At Jhunjhunwala Diamonds, we certify exclusively through these four institutions.

The Four Pillars of Value - 4Cs of Diamond Quality
Grading Laboratory

GIA
Gemological Institute of America

Established in 1931, the GIA is the world's foremost authority on diamonds, coloured stones, and pearls. Crucially, the GIA is the organisation that invented the 4Cs : Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. They created the grading standards that the entire industry follows to this day.

As a non-profit institution with no commercial interest in diamond sales, the GIA maintains the highest level of independence and objectivity. Its grading reports are considered the global benchmark against which all other certificates are measured, and are accepted and respected by dealers, retailers, and buyers in every corner of the world.

Why GIA Stands Apart

The GIA's non-commercial status means their graders have no incentive to inflate grades. Consistent, reproducible results across decades have made the GIA report the single most trusted document in the diamond trade.

IGI
International Gemological Institute

The International Gemological Institute is the world's largest independent organisation for the certification of diamonds, gemstones, and jewellery. Unlike most labs that focus solely on loose diamonds, IGI offers comprehensive grading services for mounted jewellery , making it the preferred certifying body for diamond jewellery pieces in India and across Asia.

IGI's commitment to consumer transparency has led to comprehensive documentation standards and clear report formats that empower buyers at every stage of their purchase, making it highly accessible and trusted across the Indian market.

IGI for Diamond Jewellery

IGI is the world's largest independent laboratory for the certification of diamonds and fine jewellery, and one of the most widely trusted names for diamond jewellery certification in India.

SGL
Solitaire Gemological Laboratories

Solitaire Gemological Laboratories (SGL) is one of India's most respected and widely used independent grading laboratories, with deep roots in the Indian jewellery trade. SGL has established itself as a prominent name for the certification of diamond jewellery within India, and its reports are widely recognised and accepted by reputable jewellers across the country.

SGL operates an extensive grading network across key jewellery hubs in India, providing accessible and reliable certification services to the Indian trade. Its reports follow established 4Cs grading methodology, and SGL is particularly well-regarded for diamond jewellery certification in the Indian market.

SGL & the Indian Market

SGL's reports are particularly prevalent for diamond jewellery certification in India. When purchasing jewellery accompanied by an SGL certificate, you can verify the report details directly with the laboratory's online portal for authenticity assurance.

HRD Antwerp
Institute of Gemmology

HRD Antwerp's primary shareholder is the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) , a private foundation established in 1973 as the Hoge Raad voor Diamant, or Diamond High Council, the representative body of the Belgian diamond industry. Antwerp has historically been the world's diamond trading capital, and HRD embodies that heritage.

The HRD Antwerp diamond laboratory is one of the largest in the world, issuing reliable diamond grading and jewellery reports fully compliant with the rules for grading polished diamonds set by the International Diamond Council (IDC). HRD certificates are particularly prevalent for diamonds originating from or traded through the Antwerp pipeline, and are highly respected internationally.

European Standard of Excellence

HRD grading reports meet the strictest international standards and are especially regarded in European diamond markets. Diamonds accompanied by an HRD report carry the weight of Antwerp's centuries-long diamond trading authority.

Gold Purity

BIS Hallmarking

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Hallmark is the Government of India's mandated purity mark for gold jewellery, serving as the definitive assurance that the metal in every piece meets the exact purity standard it bears. All jewellery mounts and diamond jewellery at Jhunjhunwala Diamonds carry mandatory BIS Hallmarking, in compliance with the Government of India's hallmarking regulations.

Our Standard

Jhunjhunwala Diamonds offers diamond jewellery across multiple gold purity options — each piece fully BIS Hallmarked, ensuring the purity of the metal is independently verified and guaranteed.

Reading Your Certificate

What a Diamond Certificate
Tells You

A grading report is a detailed scientific analysis of your diamond. Here is what each element means and why it matters to you as a buyer.

Cut Grade

Excellent to Poor

The most important grade on any certificate. Cut determines how well a diamond reflects light : its brilliance, fire, and scintillation. An Excellent or Ideal cut is non-negotiable for a diamond that truly sparkles.

Colour Grade

D to Z Scale

D represents absolute colourlessness. The scale descends through the alphabet as yellow tinting increases. For diamond jewellery, G–H are the sweet spot , effectively colourless to the naked eye, and significantly more accessible in price.

Clarity Grade

FL to I3 Scale

Flawless (FL) means no inclusions or blemishes under 10× magnification. VS2 and SI1 grades are eye-clean to the naked eye : inclusions are invisible without magnification , offering outstanding value.

Carat Weight

Precise Measurement

One carat equals 0.2 grams, and is measured to the nearest hundredth of a carat (0.01ct). The certificate records this precisely , protecting you from any rounding practices that could misrepresent the diamond's weight.

Fluorescence

None to Very Strong

Indicates whether the diamond glows under ultraviolet light. None to Faint fluorescence is ideal. Medium to Very Strong blue fluorescence can occasionally create a hazy appearance in colourless diamonds in natural daylight.

Polish & Symmetry

Excellent to Poor

Polish refers to the smoothness of each facet surface; Symmetry to how precisely each facet aligns. Excellent in both contributes to the maximum light performance of a well-cut diamond.

“A certificate is not merely a document , it is the written promise that what you see is exactly what you get. At Jhunjhunwala Diamonds, we believe every customer deserves that certainty.”
