Walk into most jewellery stores in India and you will be told that every diamond is beautiful, every stone is of excellent quality, and every price is justified. The uncomfortable truth is that diamonds vary enormously in quality and most buyers have no way of telling the difference.
At Jhunjhunwala Diamonds, we believe an informed buyer is the best kind of buyer. So here are 10 signs from our experts to you that tell you a diamond is genuinely excellent:
It Has a GIA or IGI Certificate A genuinely high-quality diamond is graded by an internationally recognised, independent laboratory. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the gold standard globally. IGI (International Gemological Institute) is widely trusted in India. If a jeweller offers you a certificate from an unrecognised local lab, be cautious independent labs have no incentive to flatter a stone.
Expert Tip: At JJD, every diamond we sell comes with a GIA or IGI certificate. Verify any certificate online directly on the GIA or IGI website it takes 30 seconds.
The Cut Grade is Excellent or Very Good Cut is the most important of the 4Cs because it determines sparkle. A well-cut diamond reflects light from every angle, creating that signature brilliance. An Excellent cut grade on a GIA certificate is your assurance of maximum fire and scintillation.
It Passes the Sparkle Test Hold the diamond under a single light source. A high-quality diamond will display three things simultaneously: brilliance (white light reflected back), fire (rainbow flashes of colour), and scintillation (the pattern of light and dark as it moves). If a diamond looks dull or glassy, the cut is not good.
The Colour Grade Is Appropriate for Its Setting For a white gold or platinum setting, look for D–H on the GIA colour scale. For yellow gold, G–J is perfectly appropriate and more cost-effective. A diamond outside these ranges for its setting metal will look visibly off-colour.
It is Eye-Clean Eye-clean means no inclusions are visible to the naked eye (without magnification). Most diamonds graded VS1, VS2, or even SI1 are eye-clean. Do not pay premium prices for Flawless or IF clarity unless you are buying investment-grade diamonds above 2 carats.
Expert Tip: An SI1 clarity diamond with an Excellent cut will look identical to a VS1 to the naked eye. The price difference can be ₹30,000–₹50,000 on a 1-carat stone. Use that saving wisely.
The Diamond Looks Proportional, Not Flat A diamond that has been cut too flat (to maximise carat weight from a rough stone) will not sparkle correctly. GIA certificates include depth percentage and table percentage for a round brilliant, a depth of 59–63% and table of 53–63% are ideal.
It Comes with a Laser Inscription Many GIA and IGI certified diamonds have their certificate number laser-inscribed on the girdle (the outer edge) of the diamond. This number corresponds directly to their certificate. Ask to see this under magnification it is proof of authenticity.
The Jeweller Can Answer Technical Questions Clearly A trustworthy jeweller will answer your questions about the 4Cs patiently and specifically. If a salesperson deflects, generalises, or cannot point you to the certificate, that is a red flag. At JJD, our team is trained to walk you through every detail of every diamond.
The Price is Justifiable Against the Certificate Once you know the 4Cs, you can benchmark prices. Natural diamond prices in India are broadly transparent a 1-carat, G colour, VS1 clarity, Excellent cut GIA-certified round brilliant diamond typically retails in the range of ₹3.5–5.5 lakhs depending on the retailer. Prices dramatically below this range should raise questions; dramatically above it should require extraordinary justification.
You Feel No Pressure to Buy This is not about the diamond itself, but about where you are buying it. A jeweller who is confident in the quality of their product will give you time, information, and space to decide. High-pressure sales tactics are the last refuge of a retailer who knows their product cannot stand up to scrutiny.
